Taking Advantage

As the market continues to pull back, wait for the market to tell you it is safe to re-enter longs. Do not try to take advantage of this pull back by being a hero and go bargain hunting. The bargains you find could turn out to be a much better bargain if the pull back turns into a major correction.

Stocks Pulled Back

Last Thursday, many stocks that have run up show some sign of upside exhaustion. Therefore, today's pull back/consolidation on many of those stocks should not be unexpected or surprising. The market ended down modestly. Although there are stocks making extraordinary gains such as those in the fuel cell sector and the biotech sector, one should not get into an emotional chase mode after these price move. More importantly, don't be greedy if you caught one of those trades.

Setting Up

After a huge run up since last Monday sell off, the market appears to be setting up for another pull back to digest the recent gains. Lot of stocks were showing short term upside exhaustion on Thursday. The prudent thing to do is to set the stops to protect the profits and prevent turning a winning trade into a losing trade. The market has not indicated it has made a top yet. Therefore, one should not be tempted to short this market when the pull back materializes.

Too Much Too Fast

Today the market opened with some strength but unable to really build on that opening strength. Similarly with many stocks, lot of them pulled back from their high of the day (HOD) and many of them even went below their opening price. It appears the recent run up is too much and too fast, and that made it very tempting for those that bought it at lower prices to take profits.

Expect The Unexpected

Once again, the market reminded us to expect the unexpected. When the Russia and Ukraine conflict flared up last Friday, everyone was expecting the market to sell off big time when trading resume this week.

Stocks And Market Outlook - 2/11/2014

The market continues its bounce off the recent pull back. Although volume is still relatively low and that cast some doubts on the validity of this rally to many market participants. When these disbelievers throw up their hands and chase the move is when the market will likely be making an attempt to take out the previous all time high.

Stocks To Watch - 8/21/2013

The market still in the process of deciding which direction it wants to move. The SP500 is hanging around the 50 SMA that can easily break toward the downside or reverse back toward the upside. While the market is deciding, there are stocks showing strength and stocks at the crossroad where it can break down or reverse back up just like the market might do.

Ready To Move

Here are three stocks that been beaten up for a while, and now they appear to be ready to move.

GS has been trending down and showing divergence between price & MACD. It has broken out the two months downward price channel and trying to break above 139.

HPQ formed an inverted head & shoulder between mid May to the present. If it breaks out of this price pattern, look for potential move to fill the price gap near 39-40 level.

MU has formed a double bottom and could be making a move higher.

Disclosure: long GS & MU, no position on HPQ

MRVL - Long (6/30/2011)

The results from yesterday's breakout watch post are:

- HPQ gap up and ran off. Skip this setup and wait for next setup.
- RIMM stayed home and made little progress toward breakout level. Continue watch.
- MRVL moved above breakout level 14.54 and initiated a swing long.

MRVL:

A swing long position was initiated as the price of MRVL moved above 14.54. Keeping this trade tight by setting the stop to breakeven level after the intraday price has reached 14.78. This trade is now a risk free trade. Here is the daily price chart showing today's move.

HPQ:

HPQ opened with a gap up. There was news on possible breaking up the company by PE buying pieces of the company. Today's price action formed a shooting star candle which can result in a reversal move. Will pass on this setup and wait for the next setup.

Disclosure: long MRVL

When Will This End

This relief bear market rally has been very frustrating to the bears and agonizing to those sitting on the sideline. When this rally started, most market participants were looking for the DJI to rally back to 7100 and at most back to the Nov 2008 low in the 7500 range. Instead, the DJI has surpassed the 7500 level and it is now approaching 8000. Every time the bears call for a pullback, the market continue to move higher to squeeze the shorts and antagonize the non-believers. As this rally continue, more and more talking heads are starting to think this rally might be more than a bear market rally and questioning when this rally will end. It is precisely this change in sentiments will bring this rally to an end.

Here are the latest charts with updated commentary:

I believe this rally won't come to an end until the DJI breaks the 8000 level and move toward the trendline resistance level around 8300-8400, and the SP500 tested the 870 level with the Nasdaq 100 moving up to the 1400 level. Some of the movers that will help propel the market to these levels will be the tech heavy weights such as HPQ, AAPL, INTC, CSCO and AMAT.

I'll be watching closely for the end of this rally and start locking in on some of the profits from the longs. when this rally has ended, the next downward move for the DJI could be the bottom everyone was looking for.
