Hike Or No Hike
If you have listened to all the talking heads speaking about the possibility of a rate hike from the upcoming FOMC meeting, you might have walked away thinking the rate hike from the FED is a foregone conclusion. But in the meantime, here are some charts for you to muddle a bit and see if indeed it is a foregone conclusion that the rate hike is imminent.

It Just Keep Going
The market simply keeps going up as there is nothing to impede its march toward the 16,000 for the DJIA and 1800 for the SP500. The Russell 2000 still lag all the market indices and warrant a close watch for clues of possible pull back or blow out.
The following chart shows how all the indices are synchronized on making new high while the Russell 2000 is trailing behind.

Downtrend Continue
The US dollar continues to strengthen due to 'flight to safety' caused by the uncertainties from the Euro crisis and the direction of the US economy.
All the major sectors appear to have turned downward. Until the current uncertainties are removed from the market, the market will continue to be very news driven. Unless one is shorting this market, it is best to move to the sideline and wait for the dust to settle before start looking for long positions. Presently, it is best to be 'out of the market wishing you are in' than 'in the market wishing you are out'. Capital preservation is job one right now. Do not be tempted by a dead cat bounce that will likely to happen in the near term as the market is getting to the oversold condition. Wait for confirmation from the market that the end of the downtrend has occurred before moving back into the market.
Disclosure: Long SH, PSQ, and AAPL PUT

Happy Holiday!
Looks like Santa Claus is bringing the bulls a present for the holiday by having the SP500 breaks out of the wedge and move back above the 1260 level. The daily chart for the SP500 shows the recent price actions seem to favor an upside breakout.

As another possible holiday gift, the battered financial sector finally showing some upside bids and could be setting up to reverse its downward trend (see the chart for ETF, XLF below.)

And not to overlook the homebuilders, they too are showing some sign of upside price trend. Take a look at the price chart for the homebuilders ETF, XHB.

Finally, Santa did not forget AAPL. It too has moved above the baseline near 396 and appears to be making a move back above the 400 level.

If these price actions hold up and the SP500 stays above 1260, then the SP500 could end the year 2011 in the green.
Have a happy holiday!

Things To Watch
Until the end of QE2, the market will continue to move higher. Although the recent price actions showing the market is stalling (potential pull back), but the trend remain to be up. The things to watch as the market make its next move to higher level are the continuation of rising commodities prices due to weakening US dollar. And for the market to mount a rally with conviction, the financial and the tech sector will need to participate.
The ETFs to watch are MOO (commodities), GLD (gold), TBF (short US Treasury), UUP (US dollar), XLF (financial), and SMH (semiconductor). The weekly price chart for XLF show it is forming a cup and handle price pattern, while the weekly price chart for the semiconductor sector ETF, SMH show it is working on its weekly bull flag move.
GLD (gold):

MOO (commodities):

UUP (US dollar):

TBF (20+ yrs US Treas. Short):

XLF (financial):

SMH (semiconductor):
